Additional PSN Plus Freebies

Hopefully by now all PS3 owners have jumped on to the fixed PSN to download their two freebies. But as I’m sure you are aware, in addition to the two free games there is a free 30 day subscription to Playstation Plus to be taken advantage of. While any ‘free’ games you download through this service can only be played while you are signed up to Playstation Plus, that is 30 days (more than enough) to get your fill of a couple of different titles, maybe rack up some more trophies, before you fully get into your two selected Welcome Back Package free games.
The noted titles that are up for grabs until the 16th of June (when a new batch should be available) are the full edition of current generation games Burnout Paradise and Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers. I can’t stress enough what a fantastic game Burnout is. You should definitely take the time to download and play this racing/demolition derby hybrid. It shows its age somewhat as one of the earliest released titles for the PS3, but it is great fun single and multiplayer and is definitely worth your time.
Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers is a simplified digital version of the famous trading card game Magic the Gathering. If you are into strategy games, card games or even complex puzzle games you should absolutely download this game to see what all the fuss is about. Fans of more action oriented games are unlikely to find this game particularly enthralling though and it is best avoided by these gamers.

In addition to these two new games you can download for free full versions of some classic titles. Streets of Rage 2 is the highlight here, I’ll go as far as to say it is one of the best games ever released on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and should be downloaded by everybody! I’ll get a retro review up for this title as soon as I can for those of you unsure, but rest assured that it is going to score at least 9 out of 10…possibly more. The other titles are interesting. If you have already owned/played Burnout Paradise and Streets of Rage 2 and are not interested in Magic the Gathering, then perhaps James Pond 2, ‘BABEL The King of the Blocks’ and ‘The 2D Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character’ should be downloaded. Keep in mind though that unless you are planning to permanently subscribe to Playstation Plus, ALL of these games will no longer work after your free 30 days runs out.
Also available are a couple of free dynamic themes for the PS3 and a set of 5 PSN avatars from the PSP title Patapon 3 (hey, free is good right?). There are also some reasonable discounts off a select group of other titles as well. If you purchase a discounted game during your 30 day free subscription then this WILL be available for you to play after your Playstation Plus membership runs out (at no extra cost). If you have some spare change to throw around there may be something here that tickles your fancy:
  • PlayTV Live Chat – 25% off until 6 July 2011
  • THEXDER NEO – 50% off
  • Worms – 50% off
  • Burn Zombie Burn – 50% off
  • Chime Super Deluxe – 20% off
  • Under Siege – 40% off
However, with the large range of new and free titles at your fingertips I would suggest focusing on these titles for now and ignoring the discounts for the time being. Enjoy your freebies readers, I know that I will… just don’t forget to do everything you want with them before your 30 day subscription runs out.
