Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Screenshots Leaked

Looks like someone got a bit too excited! Ahead of tonight's formal reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, a series of screenshots have hit the web. The three pictures, enclosed in this article, confirms that the upcoming sequel will have a futuristic setting.

Two screens show a soldier under attack by previously revealed Quadrotor drones - big military airships powered by four huge rotors - while a third sees a number of these vehicles engaging in combat against an urban environment. Things are quite clearly blowing up, too.

Visually, the game is looking rather tasty, but it's also decidedly brown. That's the future, folks. It's certainly a big jump from the Cold War era that we experienced with the first Black Ops game. Are you pleased with it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.

Grand Theft Auto V

Months after the release of the first official trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, details on the game have remained fairly scarce.  Now however, information about the direction of the upcoming sequel is finally coming to light.
“The greatest thing about the franchise’s last visit to San Andreas wasn’t the action, or story, or freedom to explore a huge, detailed world,” said Leslie Benzies, long-time producer of the GTA series. “It was the game’s meticulous attention to the protagonist’s physiology. If you ate too much, your character would become fat and sluggish; if he spent a lot of time at the gym he’d get stronger. That’s the sort of thing that gets people invested, that really makes them believe in the world of the game. With Grand Theft Auto V, we’re really pushing that to the forefront to make the most exciting open-world action game/health and personal hygiene simulator ever released.”
GTA: San Andreas’ character development mechanics will be returning in even greater detail. While its predecessor’s tracking of the player’s physical condition was relatively simple, Grand Theft Auto V will have a much more detailed system. “It’s not just a matter of going to the gym, doing some button-mashing to lift some weights, and getting stronger. You’ve got to exercise all the major muscle groups- quads, lats, abdominals, everything- as well as aerobic exercise to maintain cardiovascular health. You’ll also have to maintain proper levels of hydration, have appropriate rest periods between sets, remember to wipe off the equipment afterward if you’re using an exercise machine- all the fascinating minutiae of exercise.
“The player will have tremendous freedom to choose different training options according to the sort of development they want for their own character, whether it’s weight machines, treadmills, jogging, the StairMaster, free weights, isolation exercises, deadlifts, squats, or injecting various mixtures of anabolic steroids, amphetamines, and human and animal hormones into your buttocks. You’ll have to choose wisely, of course, or you may end up with a huge upper body and little stick legs, or be unable to throw a decent punch because you’ve developed huge biceps but neglected your triceps, or become so ‘roided up that you become an acne-covered, tiny-balled, man-bosomy rageaholic or, God forbid, a Gears of Warcharacter.”
Other physical attributes of the main character will also play an important role during gameplay, requiring players to carefully monitor and manage things like their current bowel and bladder capacity, blood sugar, hair length, body odor, breath odor, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, beard length, sperm count, sun exposure and sunscreen SPF, fingernail and toenail length, blood alcohol content, risk of dangerous interactions between prescription medications, and many other important stats.
“There will be a lot of challenging minigames to really bring the character to life,” Benzies said. “Showering, shaving, applying various creams and lotions, using the toilet, brushing your teeth, changing your contact lenses, ‘taking care of business’ when your character gets lonely, and lots of others. Videogame development is a conservative industry. I’m sure there are naysayers who will insist that fans of the Grand Theft Auto series won’t want to have to periodically interrupt the game’s usual intense intense action and excitement to play minigames that revolve around mashing buttons to successfully mix a protein shake, or maintain correct posture during a shoulder press, or douse yourself in aftershave to conceal how long it’s been since you’ve showered, but we believe gamers are a lot more open to innovation than they’re given credit for.”

Apple chairman Steve Jobs dies at 56

SAN FRANCISCO - Steve Jobs, the innovative co-founder of Apple who transformed personal use of technology as well as entire industries with products such as the iPod, iPad, iPhone, Macintosh computer and the iTunes music store, has died.
The Apple chairman was 56.

The iconic American CEO, whose impact many have compared to auto magnate Henry Ford and Walt Disney- whom Jobs openly admired - abruptly stepped down from his position as CEO of Apple in August because of health concerns. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer.
A seminal business and technology leader, Jobs' success flowed from a relentless focus on making products that were easy and intuitive for the average consumer to use. His products were characterized by groundbreaking design and style that, along with their technological usefulness, made them objects of intense desire by consumers around the world.
He was known as a demanding, mercurial boss and an almost mystical figure in technology circles as well as popular culture. Author and business consultant Jim Collins once called Jobs the "Beethoven of business."
He was one of the people who made Silicon Valley the capital of technological innovation and venture capital fortunes.
His creation of iTunes as an online way to purchase music digitally helped transform the music industry and delivered a blow to the standard industry practice of packaging music in albums or CDs. With iTunes, consumers could buy individual songs for 99 cents. The music industry didn't welcome the change at first, but after waging an intense battle against illegal downloads, it came to rely on the business model iTunes created.
Jobs' work at Apple and other projects made him a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine in 2011 at $8.3 billion. He was No.110 on Forbes' list of billionaires worldwide and No.34 in the United States, as of the magazine's March 2011 estimates.
Unlike tech rival Bill Gates of Microsoft or business leader Warren Buffett, Jobs did not make a practice of public philanthropy. While he may have made anonymous gifts to charity, he did not publicly embrace Gates' and Buffett's call for the wealthiest Americans to pledge to donate half their fortunes.
Jobs was married to Laurene Powell Jobs, 47. He had four children, three with Powell Jobs. A fourth child, Lisa, had an early Apple computer - a predecessor to the Macintosh - named after her. The family succeeded in keeping the children out of the spotlight and largely unknown to the public. Jobs was a Buddhist.
FACEBOOK: News10 fans react to Jobs' death
Apple, and a re-boot
Jobs dropped out of Reed College to build computers with high school friend Steve Wozniak, creating what became the Apple I computer in 1976.
As sales lagged by the 1980s, Jobs was ousted from the company's leadership in a 1985 boardroom coup led by then-Apple CEO John Sculley. He returned in 1996 after Apple bought his technology start-up, NeXT, for $400 million. Within months, Jobs took over as Apple CEO for the ousted Gil Amelio and led a major corporate turnaround.
Five years later, with the release of the iPod personal digital music player, Apple had leaped from computer maker to become the leading consumer electronics giant worldwide.
Millions of its computers and gadgets were produced in Asia and sold to U.S. and worldwide markets, making the company one of the most recognizable and beloved brand names ever.
Once on the brink of a financial abyss, Apple had a market value of $350 billion - not far behind No.2 Exxon Mobil - by the time Jobs resigned as CEO.
After his forced departure from Apple, Jobs bought what became Pixar from filmmaker George Lucas. The digital animation movie company has produced box-office hits including Toy Story and Finding Nemo. Disney bought the company for $7.4 billion in 2006. Jobs held a 7.3% ownership stake in Disney.
Health concerns
He was known for creating a culture of secrecy at Apple that fueled intense media speculation about the company's next product. Jobs himself introduced major products with flair at highly anticipated events that proved to be one of the company's best marketing tools.
Jobs didn't hesitate to level caustic comments at competitors, particularly Microsoft in earlier years and later Google, which he ridiculed as evil, mediocre and lacking in taste. His skewering of Microsoft was parodied in a series of TV ads featuring the characters "Mac" and "PC."
Jobs was known for firing employees in profanity-laced tantrums and reducing some subordinates to tears. Yet many of his top deputies at Apple and Pixar worked with him for years.
Jobs is listed as an inventor or co-inventor on 313 Apple patents, including the iPod's user interface.
Although he brought simple, elegant technology to the masses, the reclusive Jobs was often uncomfortable around people and rarely spoke publicly. On rare occasions when he spoke with reporters, he offered few or no personal insights.
His reluctance to appear in public led to questions about his health, as did a dramatic loss in weight and gaunt appearance.
Jobs was diagnosed with a form of pancreatic cancer in 2003. He informed Apple employees in 2004.
"No one wants to die," he said in a commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005. "And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it."
Jobs' status as a corporate star put him on the covers of Time, Fortune and Forbes.
"Jobs led an enormous cultural shift of the businessman as a creative, even artistic, force," says Alan Deutschman, author of The Second Coming of Steve Jobs.
"When Jobs first came on the scene, it wasn't cool to be in business," Deutschman says. "Through the 1970s, the Dow hardly moved. Being in business was seen as being a total sellout. But Jobs was young and glamorous, and gave business that image. Now, young people aspire to be in business."
The early years
Steven Paul Jobs was born in San Francisco on Feb. 24, 1955, to unwed parents. He was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs of Mountain View, Calif.
The young Jobs contacted William Hewlett, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard, to ask for parts for a class project. Impressed, Hewlett offered Jobs a summer internship.
Upon graduating from Homestead High School in Cupertino, Calif., in 1972, Jobs briefly went to Reed College in Portland, Ore. After a stint as a video-game designer at Atari, Jobs trekked to India in 1974, where he embraced Eastern culture and religion. Shortly after that, he lived in a commune in California.
In 1975, Jobs began hanging out with the Homebrew Computer Club and a friend from high school, Steve Wozniak. Jobs, then 21, and Wozniak - the "two Steves," as they became known - co-founded Apple Computer in Jobs' parents' garage in 1976.
By 25, Jobs was a millionaire. His first go-round at Apple was highlighted by the creation and introduction, in 1984, of the Macintosh, a revolutionary personal computer with an inviting graphical user-interface and mouse that popularized PCs for the masses.
The influence of the Beatles ran deep to Apple's core, too. Jobs presented a Mac to Yoko Ono, wife of the late John Lennon, and was ensnared in a long-running trademark lawsuit with the music group's Apple Corps label. It was settled in 2007.
In a 1996 interview in San Francisco, Jobs offered a glimpse of his hopes to mirror the success of Walt Disney and George Lucas. "Computers are commodities with a six-month shelf life," he said. "Classics like Snow White and Fantasia are passed from generation to generation."
Wozniak said Apple is a reflection of Jobs' creative daring.
"He helped it achieve incredible things in music, smartphones, tablets and retail, while still making great computers," said Wozniak, who said he and Jobs occasionally talk.
Leander Kahney, author of Inside Steve's Brain, said Jobs reconciled conflicting personality traits into an eclectic business philosophy.
"Jobs embraced the personality traits that some considered flaws - narcissism, perfectionism, total faith in his intuition - to lead Apple and Pixar to triumph against steep odds," Kahney says. "In the process, he became a self-made billionaire."

Fifa 12 Review

Thankfully, FIFA 12 has not innovated simply for the sake of it. The gameplay innovations greatly improve the way FIFA plays. Matches unfold with a more authentic tempo, taking it much closer to the real thing. Revolution? Evolution? Who really cares. More importantly, is FIFA 12 the best football game in the world? I don't think so. But I'd put it in my top one.

Battlefield 3 beta attracts 12 million

Battlefield 3 beta attracts 12 million.

The currently on-going beta testing of Battlefield 3 has proven to be massively successful for EA and DICE. In the second beta update on the series official blog, general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson says that DICE is seeing “6 times the number of simultaneous players in the Battlefield 3 Open Beta compared to the Beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2!”
The public beta kicked off less than a week ago.
To compare, the Bad Company 2 sampler early last year was downloaded 2 million times in its first 5 days of availability.
The blog post also reiterates that the main purpose for the beta is to stress test the servers and backend, and that the game on show is based over a month old code, so bugs are to be expected; “the code you are now playing is actually quite early and not representative of the final game.”
“The final game will look, play and sound better than the Open Beta. You have helped making sure of that.”

New Modern Warfare 3 Screenshots Released

Not many people know this, but a small company by the name of Activision is getting ready to launch a little known military shooter called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Battlefield 3 beta hacked to support 128 players

The Battlefield 3 beta is currently seeing well over 100,000 players spread out across numerous game servers, all officially running the Operation Metro map with the Rush mode, with support of up to 32 players.
Unofficially, however, several servers have been popping up with the conquest version of Operation Metro, which supports up to 64 players. Not only that, some game servers have already been hacked to support up to 128 players — we’ve tested out Operation Metro on conquest with 64 and 128 players, and can confirm their existence, albeit, the 128 player server lagged considerably.
Since then, DICE has released a statement on Battlelog, informing users not to join any unofficial/hacked servers. Doing so can compromise your EA account and have it banned by EA (meaning you won’t have access to your other EA games, either).

GameFocus E3 Preview: Mass Effect 3

Million of units sold worldwide, a memorable hero, a rich cast of supporting characters, numerous awards and universal gamer acclaim. To Mass Effect fans, this sci-fi space opera is just as great as Star Wars or Star Trek. At least, it is for me. Travelling to distant worlds and building key alliances, among other things, while saving the galaxy and fighting for freedom...all are ingredients for success, provided it’s done right. And BioWare’s dedication to deliver the best gaming experience isn’t new. Knowing right from the beginning in 2006 that the Edmonton-based developer would slowly build up towards the epic third chapter that is Mass Effect 3 (especially for those who will be carrying over their ME1-ME2 save games), my E3 demo in Los Angeles was one of the most anticipated moments of 2011.
Presented as the pinnacle of the Mass Effect experience and after eight years of intense hard work, this ambitious series reaches its climax in 2012. Commander Shepard’s new mission is to enlist the help of key personnel scattered across the galaxy, retrieve critical war assets, and liberate facilities in an effort to save Earth from the malicious Reapers, who are determined to harvest the green planet’s resources and subsequentially destroy it.
As Shepard and his squadmates travel to Sur’Kesh (Mordin Solus’ homeworld) to secure a female Krogan, a rare species in the Mass Effect universe and the key to unite the divided Krogan worlds. The demo showcased the different ways gamers can tackle missions in the game, whether it’s the tactical route using squad-based movements (via the Power Wheel, which is once again used to set powers and queue up attacks) combined with a fluid cover-to-cover system a la Gears of War for both stealth/flanking strategies or the universal run n’ gun path. Among the improvements and additions, Shepard now has an Omni Blade, a glowing knife used for efficient closed-quarters-combat or to surprise an enemy from behind with a deadly takedown. Hand grenades are also part of Shepard’s arsenal. Going towards a more action-focused Mass Effect and giving players further offensive/defensive tactics, Bioware is literally augmenting Shepard’s "badass level" up a notch, as if he wasn’t bringing enough pain already.
Nothing to worry though, despite having evolved into a third-person action-shooter, Mass Effect 3 still has an interesting RPG aspect. On top of the dialog and moral choices Shepard will face throughout his journey, weapons can be modified - via work benches - for visual preferences and statistical values but also, to adapt to the different play styles. Character progression was also expanded, giving the possibility to branch out towards various powers and skills. Casey Hudson, the franchise’s executive producer, pointed out that despite being the conclusion of an epic trilogy, Mass Effect 3 was also designed with the intent to allow beginners who have never experienced the first two games to jump right in, as the third chapter opens up the future of the Mass Effect series after this trilogy concludes.
Hudson closed out his demo with a segment towards the beginning of the game. Those who’ve been following the franchise know that Shepard has a troublesome past. Detained on Earth for hearings (on previous actions in the game’s universe), his hearing is being cut short as Reapers land and attack. I won’t be detailing what happens because I have a personal issue with spoilers. However, I must say that action games rarely get to touch the sentimental cord. As much as a game like Gears of War 2 managed to get out a few tears outta me, I never thought Mass Effect would ever put me in that same state. Proof that video games aren’t always about pew-pew-pew and immature fun. Immersing storytelling is important and its one of the reasons why BioWare strikes gold with pretty much every title they make. At this point, it wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you that Mass Effect 3 is my most anticipated game of 2012. Hopefully its yours now too. Look out for it.

GameFocus E3 Preview: Far Cry 3

With so many first-person shooters going the scripted-action route, it’s nice when there are those that go in a different direction; or at the least offer a varying experience. UbiSoft Montreal revealed Far Cry 3 at E3 this year and after checking it out behind closed doors, it’s nice to see that the developers are offering up an open-world mentality with its upcoming shooter.
Far Cry 3 has you taking control of Jason Brody, who is stranded in a unnamed South American country. He’s has been captured and his girlfriend has gone missing (or possibly worse). The demonstration at E3 began with your character hearing a story from a deranged man named Vaz, who then proceeds to throw you down a cliff and into the water below. You manage to free yourself from the restraints and the boulder holding you down and then begin to make your escape.
Although everyone who watched the Ubisoft Press Conference got to see, for the most part, what I also saw behind closed doors, what the public video didn’t show was just how open-ended your execution can be. For starters, the game offers a lot of branching points and paths to discover. Not only is there an overall story, there will be numerous side-paths to discover and experience, which will drastically change the way in which a person plays the game.
The level objective in the E3 demo was for Jason to get to a helicopter in order to escape. In the public demo, the lead decides to take a more direct approach and attacks the compound head-on where the helicopter was located. While this was a more violent and risky approach, in our private demo, they decided to take a more in-direct route and try their hardest to avoid detection.
This time around, the player moved to an area from the side, managed to find a sniper rifle and commenced with taking out targets that way. Of course, he was eventually spotted, but not before dishing out a healthy dose of stealthy death upon a large group enemies. Things then got really interesting; after alerting the guerrillas, Jason uses a zip-line to traverse over the enemy campground and get closer to the helicopter. Although being fired at, he manages to land in the water and to stay alive. Thanks to the fact the water that surrounded the compound was deep, it made it harder for the enemies to spot him, meaning he was then able to get around without being shot at. Of course, you can only avoid detection for so long, but luckily in both demos, Jason gets to the helicopter and tries to force his way out of the vacinity.
The demonstration at E3 was extremely short, but thanks to the introduction of Vaz, who appears to be one really messed up character, my early interest in Far Cry 3 is already at a high level. With the game expected sometime in 2012, I look forward to seeing and hearing more about Jason, Vaz and the many other characters were are bound to meet up in this mysterious country in the months to come.

GameFocus E3 Preview: Batman: Arkham City

In 2009, Batman: Arkham Asylum surprised many people and managed to swoop in and take numerous Game of the Year Awards from different publications, including our own. With the follow-up, Batman: Arkham City, scheduled to release later this year, we had the chance to watch a demonstration of the game that showcased a bit of the combat Batman will encounter, the look of Gotham City and of course, the inclusion of Ms Feisty Pants herself, Catwoman.
For starters, Arkham City promises to be a large game and from the demonstration we got, that was an understatement. When the presentation began, we were treated with Batman gliding across the city and the amount of detail was nothing short of incredible. You could see for miles in front of you and every bit of Gotham City was accessible.
Of course, the environment isn’t the only thing that made Arkham Asylum such a great game; it was Batman’s fantastic combat and that is still intact with Arkham City. We were shown to a massive brawl that saw Batman duke it out with over a dozen different thugs that unleashed unleashed by Penguin. The mechanics in play here here was absolutely seamless and vicious for both sides. In the demonstration, the member of RockSteady’s team who was playing the game for us was trying to achieve the highest possible combo, but the best he could muster was an 11-hit combination. This was nice to see since it promises that even the best of brawlers will encounter a challenge when the odds are against them.
But out of all the highlights that are being showcased regarding Batman: Arkham City, it is the inclusion of Catwoman that stands out the most. For some, it may seem like her addition is unnecessary, but from the first moment you see her, its easy to see that her bring thrown into the mix is going to fit in just fine. Sex appeal aside, she moves and acts extremely different from Mr Wayne’s alter ego. Rather than having the Detective View that Batman has, her Thief vision allows her to see items that enemies are carrying or secret areas to explore. Also, she has the ability to crawl on walls and ceilings, which makes it possible to get to areas enemies can’t reach and is impossible for her to be seen.
Her combat is also quite different than Batman; the approach they took in the demo was to have her go the Sam Fisher route, avoiding detection as much as possible. The objective was to steal keys to open a safe and to dispose of each enemy without alerting the others. This was possible thanks to her ability to crawl on the ceiling and using cover to sneak around. When pulled off properly, it was very satisfying watching her take out two foes in one easy and quiet swoop.
Based upon what I saw, Catwoman will be extremely welcomed and her character is so interesting that I hope the writers behind Arkham City do a good job at making her arc as engaging as Batman’s without compromising the Dark Knight’s main plot. Thankfully, Batman: Arkham City is scheduled to arrive in stores this October and to be honest, that day can’t come soon enough.

GameFocus E3 Preview: Saints Row: The Third

Since we last saw them, the Saints have catapulted into international celebrities with their own brand name (energy drinks, merchandise, etc.) and flocks of adoring fans. This time, they’ve jumped ship, leaving Stilwater for the lovely Steelport. There are still multiple gangs the Saints will take on, but the major opposing force is The Syndicate (whom is still in full control of Stilwater as well) that wants to further their dominance across the world. It’s like Biggie said “Mo Money, Mo Problems”, so despite their success, the Third Street Saints will still have to lay down the law.
The E3 demo was set in an area controlled by The Luchadores, a Mexican gang who wears wrestling masks (hence the name). Volition used the open-world playground to show off some of the new features in the game. Variety is key here, with players having more options to customize their clothing (a space suit!!) and interact with people. They can run up behind a person and body slam them face first into the concrete along with performing similar fighting moves like punching a pedestrian in the crotch. Some onlookers did react, but for the most part they were oblivious to the violence occurring nearby.
Next up were melee weapons and in shocking fashion, the player pulled out a giant purple dildo bat and started beating people with it. Yes, it’s as funny as it sounds. A more violent weapon, the apoca-fist, consisted of punching people with large mitts and watching them explode into chunks. After that the player ran over to a vehicle and jacked it by jumping through the driver’s side window and drove around with improved controls that allow you to stop and turn in an instant.
Unfortunately, Saints Row is also known for its floaty physics. Volition said they overhauled the physics engine and demonstrated the improvements by participating in the Tank Mayhem event (one of the mini-games; something else Saints Row is known for). Anarchy reigned supreme with explosives raining down on everything and the tank creating vehicle pancakes after running them over. Next the player piloted a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing jet). Graphical pop-in was still apparent like before, but keep in mind that this is still an incomplete build of the game so that could improve before release. The pilot spotted a gang of Luchadores standing together, so he called an air strike that simply obliterated the crowd.
After landing the craft on a rooftop the player jump and rolled off safely onto the ground. The remaining section of the playground showed the player driving the manapult, a vehicle with a cannon on the back. Suck in bystanders with the cannon, then launch them into buildings or the air. Players can even jump into the manapult and shoot themselves into the air before deploying a parachute. Needless to say, the mayhem SR3 has lined up is nothing short of nuts.
Once we were done with the playground, it was time ti check out a story mission. Essentially, it consisted of a bank robbery led by the player who was accompanied by three gang members. All four of them were dressed up in Johnny Gat bobble head suits and they looked awesome as they fought a bank full of enemies. Humorous dialogue and ludicrous scenarios (signing an autograph during the chaos and hitching the vault to a helicopter) were sprinkled in during the mission as our hero attempted to stay on top of the vault while fighting off waves of bad guys. The demo ended with the vault slamming to the ground and the player in custody.
Based on both what I saw and the audience’s reaction, Volition has definitely demonstrated that Saints Row is the go-to franchise for outrageous, over-the-top amusement with excessive violence thrown in to make a chaotic cocktail. Saints Row: The Third appears to continue its predecessors’ tradition of fun filled entertainment that begs to be shared with friends. We’ll have to see if the rest of the game can live up to this sampling once it launches this November.

GameFocus Review: Red Faction Armageddon

Red Faction Guerrilla may have been the story of Alec Mason and his quest to save Mars from the evil Earth Defense Force but to me, it was an amazing sandbox where I could “blow s*hit up” while freeing a planet from crazy despots. All I cared for destroying buildings, collecting salvage, buying new weapons, upgrading them, then hitting the dusty martian roads to search for more stuff to explode. A couple of hours later, Mars was saved and Alec was a hero, so I would jump online and compete against friends in Wreaking Crew, the popular leaderboard-based destruction mode. In all, it was a nice overall package that definitely deserved my praises, despite the rather forgettable story.
So here we are two years later, and we’re back to Mars for Red Faction Armageddon. Leaving the open-world and adopting a more confined, linear environment, Volition’s newest entry in the popular franchise promises a far more engaging story and less distractions without compromising what the Illinois-based developer has been building upon. The result is quite different...but pleasantly interesting.
In the several years that followed Guerrilla’s war, Mars was without major conflicts. Actually, there are a few things of importance that happened between Guerrilla and Armageddon, and THQ plans to make the bridge with their upcoming SyFy series Red Faction Origins. As for Armageddon’s story, part of the premise is revealed in the opening sequence and first level. Darius Mason - Alec Mason’s grandson - joins the Red Faction to stop a certain Adam Hale from destroying the Terraformer, the key element that makes Mars’ surface habitable. Hale succeeds and with the Terraformer gone, the entire population was forced to rebuild underground. Already being despised because of his heroic origins and feeling the guilt of being unable to stop Hale, we meet up with Darius several years later working as a demolition expert. Unfortunately, Darius is tricked into opening a sealed cavern and inadvertently lets loose a vicious race of Martian creatures. Unfortunately, things won’t get better for him. However, he won’t stay there wallow in his misfortune. He will take matter into his hands in order to clear his name with the help of some key characters, his trusty Situational Awareness Module (aka S.A.M, a wink to Nanoforge’s creator and Darius grandmother Samanya Mason) and of course, some toys of destruction.
Plowing through the campaign will take approximately seven hours on the Casual/Normal difficulty setting, and depending on your skill level. The story development is very predictable, but has a considerable amount of non-stop action and surprise moments that will make any complaints minimal. The dialog is well delivered, often taking the cheeky humorist route to hide some of the weaker points. Despite that, all friendly characters are likable, particularly Darius who stands out among the rest and is certainly more gripping than his grandfather was. The fact that he wasn’t thrown in a typical and overused David vs Goliath story set-up helps his cause. There’s a few things that will go unmentioned - to avoid spoilers - but Red Faction Armageddon is indeed a tad deeper in terms of narrative compared to its predecessor. Further character development could have pushed it into into greater territory, but being an action-heavy sci-fi third person shooter, its quite understandable nowadays. Plus, the crazy weapons, such as the Magnet Gun and the Singularity Cannon, and the unlockable Nanoforge powers available throughout the game does push the story’s purpose to the side without making it completely forgettable. It’s usually a good sign when the cinematics aren’t skipped.
Before venturing into something else, let’s talk about the weapons and abilities. First, the Nanoforge. Attached to Darius’ arm, the Nanoforge can rebuild destroyed man-made structures, whether before arrival or during a heated battle. Stairs, bridges, etc. While some elements can be rebuilt for progression needs, other times the Nanoforge can be used for combat tactics, like rebuilding walls for cover against enemy attacks. The device also gives Darius four specific and upgradable powers: Shockwave (suspends and destroys living enemies), Impact (projects a sort of Force Push), Berserk (increases damage) and Shell (a protective force field). Note that just like in Guerrilla, destroyed elements give out Salvage, currency that can be traded in at specific terminals for Nanoforge upgrades. As for the weapons, pistols, shotgun, rifles, charge launcher and rocket launcher become available throughout the game but pairing the Nanoforge to the aforementioned Magnet Gun and Singularity Cannon or the Maul will make things far more easier and enjoyable. My favorite: the Magnet Gun. Once it becomes part of your inventory, you’ll have a hard time letting it go. A two-stage weapon, the Magnet Gun shoots a magnet, then an anchor, which attracts the magnet at high speed once it’s fired at an object or structure. What can be done is up to your imagination, but let’s just say that propelling enemies into an explosive barrel, which later creates a chain reaction that tears down a whole building...yes...I’ll leave it for you to discover. P.S. Mr Toots. Finish the single player campaign. You will know what I mean.
The Nanoforge, the weapons and all havoc that could have been possible during the single player campaign, but wasn’t quite “there” for certain tastes can become a reality in the game’s Infestation (Armageddon’s take on Horde mode) and Ruin (Guerrilla’s Wrecking Crew) modes. No, Red Faction Armageddon does not feature a competitive multiplayer component, unlike Guerrilla. No Anarchy, no Demolition, no Capture The Flag...all gone. Volition explained that some changes needed to be addressed in order to give the game’s story more depth and take advantage of the GeoMod engine, among other things. In all honesty, some multiplayer fanatics may feel cheated but for once, a developer stood by something many of us game critics have been complaining about over the last few years. Not all games need to be Call of Duty, Battlefield or Halo and offer a slew of adversarial modes for the sake of saying the game has them. Personally, I didn’t play a whole lot of multiplayer in Guerrilla, instead wasting countless hours of productivity in Wrecking Crew. To me, resources weren’t wasted here. If posting ridiculous high scores in Ruin isn’t your thing, then teaming up with three other friends and fighting hordes of aliens across eight Infestation missions should do the trick. And let me emphasize the “team” part. While Infestation can be played solo, it truly is a cooperative experience and is meant to be play with three of your friends. One thing of note though, the Ruin mode is unlocked via a code packed in with new retail copies of the game. No word on if it will be available for purchase separately, but we assume so.
Conclusion
Some folks may find themselves out of place during the first few levels and may miss the open-world set-up from Guerrilla but the truth is, Armageddon puts a certain emphasis on storytelling that its predecessor didn’t. It’s still miles away from other, more narrative-driven titles, but like many “save the world” type of sci-fi shooters, the game focuses on the action as well as the different weapons and Nanoforge powers given to the player to get the job done. These, and more specifically the weapons, become major players in both of the game’s multiplayer modes. And while some may question Volition’s choice to remove the usual suspects, Infestation and Ruin fills the void just fine. Hopefully additional maps and missions will be heading our way via downloadable content.

Epic Games forums hacked

Users of Epic Games forums have been informed by e-mail this morning that the forums have been hacked and that there was potential for users’ passwords to be compromised and so steps have been taken to stop any further compromises:
Dear [my epic username],
Our Epic Games web sites and forums were recently hacked.  After some downtime, they’re back up and running now.
The hackers may have obtained the email addresses and encrypted passwords of forum users. Plaintext passwords weren’t revealed, but it’s possible that those passwords could be obtained by a brute-force attack on the encrypted passwords. Therefore, we have reset all passwords.  Your new password at the bottom of this message.
The Unreal Developer Network (UDN) hasn’t been compromised.  Thankfully, none of our web sites ask for, or store, credit card information or other financial data.
We’re sorry for the inconvenience, and appreciate everyone’s patience as we wrestle our servers back under control.
Tim Sweeney
Founder, Epic Games Inc
The good news is that Epic Games has taken the sensible step in resetting all passwords. Of course if you happen to have used the same password for the e-mail address that’s associated with your forum account with Epic – you may want to go and change that.
